SO, our niece Millie, who was born on Friday, went into intensive care on Sunday night with a mystery rash. At birth she had unusual linear rashes on her wrists and ankles. No one knew what they were, but hey, babies get rashes, so on Saturday, home she went. By Sunday night they were red raw and spreading. They took her back to the hospital, and they admitted her on the spot. Kirk and Ethan lobbed up at our place at about two thirty in the morning. Naturally, Naomi stayed at the hospital. Not much sleep that night. Not much sleep for the first half of the week, really.

It has now been identified as a rare condition called incontinentia pigmenti. The main symptom is skin lesions which evolve through a series of stages in the first several years of the child's life. There can also be some quite serious neurological and ophthalmological manifestations, but she's now had a brain scan and an eye test, and she seems to have dodged that particular bullet. She's home now, and doing well. Her big brother is very happy to have her home (as indeed are the rest of us). They'll be seeing the paeditatric dermatologist at the Children's next week.
